In the movie Crimson Tide actor Gene Hackman said the following line: "War is a continuation of politics by other means." While the movie was a fictional account of a potential nuclear threat to the free world I believe that statement to be true. War is a continuation of politics. And the way the war is fought is a reflection of the politicians in charge. Just this past week General Stanley McChrystal tendered his resignation among a flury of controversy regarding his interview with Rolling Stone magazine. While his remarks about the administration may have been inappropriate in the public domain I feel that his remarks are very telling about how the military feels about how this administration is handling the conflict in Afghanistan.
Now we have General David Petreaus in charge in Afghanistan and it appears that the Rules of Engagement will be somewhat changing. Unfortunately I feel that General Petreaus is going to deal with the same political red tape that plagued McChrystal. Our men and women in uniform are currently fighting a losing battle.
A war cannot be won by fighting with one hand tied behind your back. The only way that our troops are going to win this conflict is by allowing them to take the gloves off and take the fight to the enemy. This administration either needs to do that or pull all of our troops out of Afghanistan and bring them home. Letting our troops fight the battle the way it is currently being fought is costing billions in American tax dollars and much more importantly it is costing American lives.
Both the Bush and the Obama administration has been hesistant to take the gloves off and fight the war it needs to be fought. Both administrations are concerned about world opinion and civillian casualties. Quite frankly I don't give a flip about world opinion, especially from the uber left. Civillian casualties on the other hand are always regrettable but in a state of war they are a certainty. They are for sure a certainty when you are fighting a cowardly enemy that chooses to hide behind women and children. If anyone should be blamed for civillian casualties it should be the Taliban and Al Qauda. They are the ones that are using civillians as shields. The blood of the civillians rest solely on their hands.
President Harry Truman made the decision in World War II to drop the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. By doing that President Truman put an end to World War II and saved hundreds of thousands of American lives in the process.
The Taliban have a mean dog. It is time to unleash the bigger and meaner dog of the full U.S. Military might. Take the gloves off and bring in the B-52's. Carpet bomb the entire country of Afghanistan. If needed turn the entire country into one large sheet of glass. If you're not going to do that then quit sacrificing American blood and get our men and women out of there right now. Bring them home and get ready to fight the war here on our shores. Quit appeasing the rest of the world and do what is right for AMERICA!
